Innova Research to Speak at International Graphene Fair & Conference 2016

Innova Research was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the International Graphene Fair & Conference 2016 held on 31th May to 2nd June at the World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center in Shanghai. The conference, supported by multiple research and industry organizations in the Chinese advanced material industry, including the Chinese Material Society, Shanghai Institute of Ceramic of Chinese Academy of Science (SICCAS), and the Chinese Carbon Fiber & Graphene Alliance, among others, attracts high caliber attendees from both the prestigious graphene research institutions and the leading graphene industry players across the country.

Graphene has been regarded as an important technology in China’s innovation landscape, since the Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping visited the National Graphene Institute at the University of Manchester during his state visit to the United Kingdom in October 2015. At the end of 2015, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the National Development & Reform Committee (NDRC), and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) jointly released a guidance document to support graphene related R&D projects and the commercialization of graphene technologies in China. On May 17, 2016, the MIIT further announced a plan to establish a National Graphene Innovation Center, aiming to establish a graphene industry value chain and accelerate the adoption of graphene in China.

China is the most aggressive country in the world in building up graphene production facilities in the past few years, resulting in a large production capacity and very low utilization rates in 2015. While graphene is being tested in numerous applications, most of these applications are still in the trial phase.  The scaled demand won’t kick in until later in the product development cycle, which are several years away. Under this circumstance, the development of graphene applications has been one of the largest concerns among graphene industry experts in China. Innova’s speech will assess 16 major graphene applications, including conductive film/ink, supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, anti-corrosive coating, RFIDs, among others, by technology maturity and cost reduction potential, and recommend which of the graphene applications will grow in scale in the next few years.

Richard Jun Li, Vice President of Innova Research and the presenter on the conference pointed out: “In the next few years, the focuses of Chinese graphene industry players, researchers and related investors will be shifting to seek the promising graphene applications with good market prospects. We also expect that the future government R&D funding and other supports will be primary given to projects developing graphene downstream applications, rather than to grow the graphene production capacity in China.”
